The White Guy's Guide to Black Unrest

The decision of a St. Louis County grand jury not to indict Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson for the killing of Michael Brown makes me angry, frustrated, sad, bitter, and pretty much every other negative emotion you can apply.

I can't even imagine how the black community must feel.

No, literally - I can't imagine how the black community must feel.

I'm a middle-aged white male of reasonable intelligence. I can intellectually understand the struggles and prejudices black people experience on a daily basis - but that's it. I can also intellectually understand what it must be like to be able to fly, but will I ever actually experience it? Of course not. Just like I'll never actually experience the reality of being black.

So here's my two-cents of free advice to my white brethren on this difficult day: Offer support, offer condolences, offer to help in any way you can. But don't lecture, don't scold, don't offer advice, and don't pretend you know what this feels like.

This is one of those rare days in America where it's not all about us.
